Each was generally self-sustaining, like the 580-acre site at Kings Park, equipped with everything from power plants and bakeries to sewing rooms. Preferred forms of treatment ranged from straitjackets and ice sheets to shock therapy and lobotomies. Many patients spent their entire lives in the institutions, and when they died had no one to take possession of their remains. At Kings Park two potter's fields were created, each about four acres with about 4,600 bodies. In one, the dead were buried two to a grave, with no markers. At Central Islip, a 13-acre cemetery was divided into a Catholic, Protestant and Jewish section. It is the resting place for about 10,900 former patients.
